Eating In

When it comes to eating in, the luxury lakeside cabin and yurt at Pengelly Retreat come complete with self-catering facilities including electric double hob, microwave oven (with oven functions), fridge, toaster, kettle plus crockery, cutlery and kitchen utensils.  We also put in all the essentials for you: salt, pepper, mixed herbs, cooking oil, tea, coffee, sugar, a pint of milk, butter & jam minis and bread.

Shop locally for delicious locally-sourced food and drink, get a Cornish food box with all your holiday supplies delivered to your accommodation or pick up a tasty takeaway to enjoy by the lake.   While for a special occasion (or just because!), treat yourself to an indulgent catered bespoke picnic or fine dining meal with private chef in the dreamy stream-side tipi at the Retreat.

Local Food Shopping Options

There is a large, really well-stocked farm shop – more like a small supermarket! – at Trevaskis Farm, open 8-8 every day (including weekends).  Conveniently located between the A30 and Pengelly Retreat, it’s about 10-15 minutes drive from us.  They have a wide range of local produce including fruit & vegetables, baked goods, general groceries and an excellent meat, fish & cheese counter.

There is also a good farm shop closer by in Leedstown which stocks local produce and general food supplies (5 mins drive).   Take the turn signed to Penzance at the crossroads in the Leedstown, follow this road for a minute and you’ll see the farm shop on your right, on the outskirts of the village.

For picking up the essentials, there is also a small general store and post office in Praze-en-Beeble, located in the middle of the village (about 5 mins drive from Pengelly).

Local Takeaways

Pick up a delicious Fish & Chips takeaway (it would be rude not to while in Cornwall!) from Gordy’s Fish & Chips in Praze en Beeble (5 mins drive), Frasers in Helston, Sanders Fish & Chips in Hayle (both 10 mins drive) and our favourite,  Porthleven Fish & Chips on Shute Lane near the harbour (15 mins drive).

For takeaway Pizzas, our closest is Big Gorilla Pizza Shack in Leedstown (5 minutes); we also like The Old Forge, near Lelant (15 mins) for delicious pizzas (inc vegan & gluten free options).

And for tasty takeaway street-food, bao buns and seafood try Lula Beach Shack on North Quay, Hayle.  Or Feed at the Foundry Chapel in Hayle for street-food style breakfast and lunches.  (Both 10 minutes drive.)

A little beyond Helston, down in Cury Cross Lanes on the Lizard is Jumanjy’s, a good Thai takeaway option – food has to be ordered earlier in the day for evening pick up.  Good option if you’re heading back to Pengelly Retreat after a day on the Lizard (20 minutes drive).

Fine Dining in the Pengelly Retreat Tipi with a Private Chef

Exclusively for Pengelly Retreat guests, enjoy private fine dining in the Pengelly Retreat tipi: our beautiful 18 foot tipi located in the gardens by the stream.  We can put you in touch with our recommended local chef who will prepare and serve a delicious three course meal for you.  A really indulgent and special experience in a unique setting.  We don’t charge Pengelly Retreat guests extra to book the use of the tipi for your special occasion meal, but it is subject to availability; please email us for more details at pengellyretreat@gmail.com.
